What is Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment?

Imagine you go to a dentist and find out you have two cavities.

That’s a drag! But the problem is solved with the right treatment.

You would definitely expect to get both cavities filled, right?

Anything less and you’d still have worries to deal with later.

The same is true with orthodontic treatment. When your favorite family orthodontist diagnoses an issue with a tooth gap, a misalignment, or the rest, it’s crucial to get effective treatment. If you only get “some” of the care you need, you probably won’t get any relief from the concern that brought you there in the first place.

That’s what brings many people to Beauchamp Orthodontics for comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

What Is Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment?

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment is a custom orthodontic plan that ensures the best treatment outcome for you. It’s designed to meet your needs, from adults with long-term untreated orthodontic issues to kids who are just getting started on the road to the best orthodontic health.

This kind of orthodontic treatment always starts with a complete orthodontic examination. Dr. Beauchamp will use the latest technology to get a total view of your mouth and teeth. That allows her to make the precise recommendations that will be best in your situation.

In many cases, comprehensive orthodontic treatment is a single treatment phase that corrects alignment issues for the whole mouth. The teeth of the top and bottom dental arch are treated at the same time using the right orthodontic appliance, like metal braces or Invisalign®.

Metal braces are used in the most severe cases, and in less drastic cases, adults, teens, and some children can qualify for clear plastic aligners.

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment is completed in a single phase. When your braces or aligners resolve the underlying issue, you never have to use them again. Instead, retainers are used to make sure the teeth will stay in the treated position, ensuring you’ll always continue to enjoy the benefit of your treatment.

Is There Anyone Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment Isn’t Suitable For?

Comprehensive orthodontic care is usually the best approach for most patients, but there’s one exception.

Kids should see an orthodontist for the first time no later than age seven when they’re losing baby teeth and adult teeth are coming in. This gives you time for an early orthodontic checkup that can identify problems. In some cases, there’s not quite enough space for teeth to erupt safely from the gums. In those situations, a two-phase treatment is most effective.

For these younger patients, the first phase of treatment involves using a palate expander to create more space in the soft tissue. After adult teeth erupt, they are then evaluated for any misalignment. If necessary, a child can graduate to the second phase of treatment, where they get metal braces or clear plastic aligners.

Two-phase treatment helps prevent some of the worst orthodontic complications, such as an impacted tooth. Impacted teeth either fail to erupt completely from the gums or do so in an unhealthy way, such as a sideways position. This can be very painful and usually requires a form of oral surgery to treat.

Likewise, two-phase treatment sets kids up for terrific orthodontic health later in life. Generally speaking, the earlier a young person gets orthodontic care, the sooner they’ll be done. A course of treatment might take four years for an adult patient and only two for a child or teen, to give an example.
